Growth Mindset, 2nd Time Around
I chose to watch two of the Growth Mindset videos offered for returning students, and particularly enjoyed some suggestions presented in 29 Ways to Stay Creative, and Overcome Your Fear of Failure. I did this because I already encountered Carol Dweck in Indian Epics Growth Mindset last semester, and because I wanted to see what else was available to really psych myself up for the final push before graduation.
29 Ways to Stay Creative offered practical and sensible approaches to reducing burnout, avoiding fear of failure, and offering yourself more opportunities to grow and reflect on your work as opposed to striving for deadlines. My favorite takeaway from this coincided with the theme of Overcome Your Fear of Failure, which was simply: lose the perfectionist mindset, allow yourself to make mistakes, and permit yourself to learn from them. I tend to struggle hard with agonizing over tiny details, and sometimes I lose huge chunks of my time on tasks which could be completed much more quickly if I was willing to take a big picture approach. This is going to be very important this semester, as I'll be juggling all of my capstone project work with three other classes and working fulltime :/
My suggestions for myself this semester: don't sweat the small stuff. It's the end of the undergrad journey, so try to enjoy learning again instead of agonizing over minute details. Don't spend 80% of the time dedicated for a project on formatting, and don't waste three hours searching for the perfect picture to accompany a blog post. Just do what works and gets the message across, and make enough time to review after you're done. That way you'll be able to spot any errors that crop up, and spend half the time generating the content. I don't want to let my fear of failure or bad grades interfere with my ability to learn and retain valuable information for a lifetime. Growth mindset activated!
