Introduction to a Tricenarian About to Graduate

I was part of the Indian Epics online class during the spring semester, and I wound up writing this introduction which really said almost nothing about me. This time, I'll try to give a bit more background!

Originally from the tiny town of Kemah in Texas, I migrated north to Oklahoma about five years ago. I celebrated my 30th birthday last week, which makes me the oldest undergraduate I've met yet in the OU system. I didn't have a lot of financial support early on, and I refused to take on any student loan debt, so I spent at least five scattered semesters taking only one class at a time if that was all that I could afford. I did grab an Associate's degree in general studies at community college early on, but that's about as useful as a spam email these days. Here and there I took a year off, simply because I was more comfortable working as a server/bartender/manager than forcing myself to settle on a career I wasn't completely sure of.

This is my last semester at OU as an undergraduate, as I am FINALLY graduating with my Bachelor's of Science in Microbiology this December. I'd always told myself of course I'd have my bachelor's before I turned 30, but the timing wasn't more than a few months off. While graduate school is the eventual goal, I'm debating whether to find a job in my field as an entry-level microbiologist. We will see what happens with the Great GRE Exam in a month's time, and I'll happily consider relocating to other parts of the US or Mexico if the right opportunity for future education or current employment presents itself.

My younger siblings and I (the oldest) were all homeschooled, and I'm happy to report they took much less time than I did to find their individual callings. My sister is a programmer, my brother is a nurse, and my youngest brother (he's 18 now) is finishing a degree in audio engineering while working as a night-cruise bartender/boat captain, and all of them still live in Kemah. I live far far away up by Lake Hefner here in Oklahoma, but we're extremely close and visit as often as humanly possible.

I've worked at a local Charleston's restaurant for the last 3 years, as I've found that serving provides the most fiscal return and schedule flexibility with the least amount of time invested, which is hugely important when commuting to OU daily and juggling an ever changing school schedule with an employer. It's a fun job with great coworkers, and I've made some wonderful friends. In fact, I just returned from a vacation in Cancun with one of them, and wow was that amazing! Brace yourself, because this is where the pictures come in! I've never actually been to Mexico before besides brief shoreside visits on a cruise, and I absolutely want to go back. This is how I spent the last of my summer, with my friends Kim and Kalli!

We visited Xel-Ha, an ecological park extension of Xcaret, a huge tourist attraction with many parks located in the Riviera Maya region in Quintana Roo, Mexico. I was standing on the 200-ft flexible bridge between the ocean and lagoon regions of the park, and I almost fell in trying to take this picture.

It took about 20 minutes to walk up the stairs to access the "lighthouse" slide/tower seen in the background. Only took about 30 seconds to get down again! And the snorkeling was so much fun! We saw so many fish we lost count of the different species, and three enormous manta rays.

Our hotel had a swim-up bar/restaurant. Enough said about that.

Kalli posed for me on the beach our last day there.

View from the pier on a cloudy day.

The iguanas have learned that people feed them treats if they do this dance. There were iguanas EVERYWHERE. And they were huge, some as large as 4 feet.

Our hotel put on some ridiculously entertaining evening shows. The breakdancing was something I've never seen in person before, and it was amazing!

The fire show was my favorite, and even though my choice of seat was obscured, you could still feel the heat off the stage.

  1. Hi! Well now you've met an undergrad student at OU that is older than you. I'm 46 years old and a senior technically, but still a couple semesters left to go because I changed majors from accounting to information studies. I do all my classes online though since I don't live near Norman and have to work full-time. I truly admire you for getting through OU with no student loan debt. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for myself.

  2. Congrats to you on making it to your last semester!! I’ve taken longer than the four “normal” years to finish my degree as well so I know the feeling. Your pictures of Cancun is so fun!!! Vacationing with friends is a cool experience and hopefully once I graduate I’ll be able to afford a nice vacation. I like your videos too!! Also funny story, for the longest time when I was a kid I wanted to be homeschooled! I really wanted to stay at home with my mom and learn but she didn’t feel the same. Ha. Good luck this semester and congrats again!!!

  3. Hi Laura! Congratulations on graduating this semester! I think that is takes a lot of strength to realize and acknowledge that student loans are something you do not want in your life. Today, people force attending college onto everyone and it is an unfair thing to do. I took Microbiology once and it was really interesting! I know exactly where Kemah is! I grew up in The Woodlands and I remember having the best time at the Kemah Boardwalk! It looks like you had a lot of fun travelling to Mexico! Thank you for sharing and I look forward to reading more of your posts this semester!

  4. Hey Laura! Congrats on graduation, that is both incredibly exciting and also very terrifying. I love your blog post, the whole lay out is unique and I love all of the pictures you posted in it. The pictures from your vacation look like you and your friends had an awesome time. Your story of persevering through college even with little financial support is an inspiration. I think people that are forced to do that are typically very well rounded and end up being better for it. Congrats again on graduation, you should be very, very proud.

  5. Hi Laura! I think it's amazing that you have the determination to finish school after so long. The fact that you refused to take student loans shows that as well. If it were me I would have just accepted the loans or completely gave up on college. You also picked a very difficult major to complete so that's even more impressive to me. Congrats on graduating this semester and good luck on the GRE!

  6. Hi Laura, congrats on graduating! I truly appreciate your determination as I'm sure it will take you far in life. I also come from a small town so it's nice to see us little guys doing big things. It's super interesting that you and your siblings were homeschooled and I can only imagine the type of culture shock that was when deciding to attend university. I am also super glad to hear you all are still close despite the distance. Lastly I appreciate your willingness to serve. I served most of high school and some of college and it truly takes a patient person. Best of luck to you!

  7. OMG hi Laura! First and foremost I didn't know you were in this class too! I'm Crystel from our group in Medical Microbiology. Your trip looked very fun and makes me a little jealous. haha What resort/hotel did you guys stay? I am looking at a prospective trip for a birthday present. Also congratulations on graduating this December!

  8. Oh, have no fears, Laura: you are definitely not the oldest undergraduate in the system, tricenarian though you may be, ha ha. One of the great things about teaching these online classes is that I meet students with really inspiring stories who are coming back to school in their 30s and 40s or even in their 50s (I am 54, and I've met undergrads older than me!). I totally respect graduating without debt (I took longer in school because that was my goals also!), and I think it is great that you are ready to graduate: congratulations!!! And we don't have Charleston's where we live now, but my husband and I used to go to the Charleston's all the time in Norman; I always got a funky kind of Asian chicken salad there, but that was a long time ago; I bet they have changed the menu since then. Anyway, I am so curious to see what you will do for your project this semester: the options are basically unlimited with a whole world of mythology and folklore that awaits you! :-)
About the photos: some of them did not show up for me (although my connection could just be slow to load)... you might want to play with Google Photos or Flickr to make a collection album and then you can embed the whole album in a blog post or in a sidebar widget too. I personally like Flickr but there are lot so nice photo-sharing options out there now.

  9. Hi Laura,
I'm not sure which I find more impressive: you managing to stick it out and finish college with no student debt or you commuting to and parking on campus for so many semesters without going crazy. I can't imagine staying in school for so long, but you were able to do it so congrats on that. I hope everything goes well in your final semester.

  10. Hey Laura!

I know an undergrad who is 56.. You aren't alone! Congrats on making it this far and getting a degree without any student loans. That is very impressive and a great accomplishment. It is a hard one too! I was never a science girl myself so I am thoroughly impressed by your achievements.

I hope things go your way this semester and you enjoy your last semester of college!

  11. Hi Laura! You're finally graduating! Thats huge! I don't think I'll be able to make it all the way through undergrad with zero student loans (Way to go, by the way!) but this will be my third semester completely paid for out of savings/summer job earnings. The fact that you've taken as long as you have to complete your undergrad, while still maintaining what appears to be some relative financial stability, is honestly so inspiring. Also, I've been to Cancun too! Although the drinking age there is 18 and I was around 12/13 when my family went, so you probably had more fun than I did. :)

  12. Hi! Congrats on graduating soon! I think that we put too much stock in timing, and when you get things done doesn't matter as long as you get them done and are happy with the results. And it's really cool that you get to graduate with no student loan debt. That's the dream. I've got a bit of debt, mostly because my parents pay for my sister's private school and my brother's art school. But luckily, I think it will be manageable. Your trip looks amazing! I'm from Texas too (Dallas, specifically) but I've never been to Mexico, but your photos make me really want to go.

  13. Hi Laura! Happy to hear that you are graduating soon! I think it is really inspiring you have paid your own way through school and will not have any debt when you graduate! I served for three years in high school and I agree that it is really flexible with school and so enjoyable. I loved your vacation pictures! I can always appreciate some good break dancing and you looked like you were having a lot of fun. Hopefully I can visit Cancun one day too!

  14. Hi Laura, congratulations of graduating soon! That must be very exciting. I just started my junior year so I graduate in 2020 but I am completely nervous about it. I am glad that you have learned from a past class's introduction and decided to make this one more detailed, and I also like that you provided so many pictures! They give good insight into your life, and your vacation looked fun. I hope you have a great rest of your semester!

  15. Hey Laura, It sounds like you have had quite the journey to achieve all that you have and get to the point of graduating, so congratulations on that! I will also be graduating soon and it’s terrifying but exciting at the same time. It’s difficult to be unsure of where you will be headed next, and even more difficult to feel confident making a decision about things of that magnitude. Learning to deal with that kind of ambiguity has probably been one of the most important things I have learned while at college. Best of luck with wherever your journey takes you next!

  16. Hey Laura! Congrats on being close to finishing your journey! It sounds like you have worked really hard to be where you are now and it will definitely be worth it in the end! I am graduating next semester and could not be more excited so I can only imagine how you feel! Good luck with everything, sounds like you will do great!

  17. Hi Laura, it is nice to “meet” you! I admire your tireless dedication! I am a chemical biosciences major but I have taken several microbiology classes. They have all been incredibly interesting and useful. I think if I had to do it all over again, I would major in microbiology. I wish you the best of luck in your future career!

  18. Hey Laura!
Your story in incredible and the media you've posted in this introduction was so interesting! My love for animals brought me into the world of Biology and I had never heard of the iguanas dancing before. That was so cool! I am excited for you to start your path to graduation with little student debt! Don't worry about the age of graduation because we aren't racing with anyone, your life has its own path.

  19. Hey Laura,

Congratulations on getting this far in your degree! I will be graduating in the Spring 2019, so I understand your excitement to finish. Although, I am a little sad that it is going to be over soon. I am still unsure of what I want to do with my Criminology degree, I have been toying with the idea of going to law school since I currently am employed at a law office and do find joy in being there.

Your pictures from your vacation look like you had a blast! I have always wanted to go snorkeling, but have never had the chance (besides when I was little, but that was in a pool...which doesn't count, lol). That dancing iguana is comical, I bet you could create an origin story explaining why iguana's shake their head!

  20. Hi, Laura! Congratulations on the success you've had with your degree! I will be graduating in December of 2019, so the senioritis is definitely real. I am going to miss the fun that comes from college, but I am not going to miss all the homework and studying and stress. I thought about going to law school before I came to college, but I am not the kind of person who wants to spend more than four years in school. I love all your pictures and you look like you had a great time on vacation! Have a great rest of the semester!

  21. Hi Laura! Congratulations on being so close to graduating... only a couple months to go now! I am from Oklahoma, but I actually visited Kemah last year while I was on a road trip to New Orleans and visited the boardwalk! I've been to Mexico a few times, usually to Cozumel but I have also been to Riviera Maya and Cabo, so your pictures definitely made me miss the beaches there!

  22. Hi Laura! I loved your introduction. It covered a wide variety of aspects in your life and gave a good sense of what is important to you. I especially appreciated your dedication to graduating debt free. I hope to do the same, and as I continue to grad school, it will certainly be a challenge to do so. I also loved seeing all of your photos from Mexico! I went years ago but haven't been since, and it reminded me of my own memories with friends and family. I'm excited for you that you get to graduate this semester! Congratulations, and I wish you the best of luck moving forward!

  23. Hi, Laura! Congrats on almost graduating, it is surely a huge accomplishment. Your introduction was great and I loved all the pictures you provided. That trip looked amazing. I hope to have explored and go on as many adventures soon after I graduate! I love that I can sense your type of adventure in the stories you have written!

  24. 1. Hi Laura! I really want to commend you for sticking with school and committing to graduating without any student debt! It really says how hard working you are, especially with a full time job outside of going to class. Microbiology is a difficult degree so more props to you! I really enjoyed all of your pictures! The beach is beautiful!
